A team of scientists from the Institute of Animal Diversity and Ecology (CONICET-UNC) and the Center for Applied Zoology (Argentina) have discovered in the city of Córdoba (Argentina) a particular white lizard ( Salvator meriana ) with the particularity that, after having seriously injured his tail with a sharp object, he managed to simultaneously regenerate up to 6 tails of different sizes .
The injury to this young lizard was not so serious that it lost its tail, but it was enough to start its regeneration process. What the experts did not expect was to discover that this lizard of more than half a meter in length, caused the spontaneous growth and in different places near the tail of six tails of different sizes and with an angle of up to 90º with respect to the original tail. .
Scientists, according to the SINC agency, who have published their study in the journal Cuadernos de Herpetología , a publication of the Argentine Herpetological Association, have described this phenomenon as "extremely rare" despite the fact that tail bifurcation in lizards does not is so rare (as some have the ability to create nerve cells and regenerate part of their jaw and limbs). What is unusual in this particular case is precisely the creation of this large number of queues in unison that, according to the researchers, can only generate complications and a greater expenditure of resources for the lizard.
