New Mexico geophysicist Jeffrey Johnson has been closely studying the behavior of volcanoes in Latin America for several years. The last to catch his eye was Santiaguito , in western Guatemala, which has erupted regularly since 1922. Using high-resolution video and Doppler radar, Johnson and his colleagues recorded forty daily eruptions of the volcano for an entire week. . One of them stars in this video.
In addition, the researchers verified that the explosive emissions of gases, rocks and ash coincided with an ascent of the solidified lava dome that crowns the volcano. In an article published today in Nature, Johnson concludes that these episodes could explain the long and constant tremors or low frequency earthquakes that shake the area.
