Although scientists have long known that oregano can function as a natural poison against insects, this is the first time that 18 components have been identified in its oil that explain its extraordinary properties. According to Dr. Chahrazed Boutekedjiret, co-author of the study, it is foreseeable that "in the near future, natural insecticides like this, much more respectful of the environment, will replace synthetic ones."
It is not the only future application for oregano. Recently a team of Spanish researchers from the University of Lleida demonstrated that combining apple puree with oregano oil is obtained a substance capable of destroying E.coli bacteria that in many cases contaminate fresh fruits and vegetables.
