How to prevent ants from entering your pet's food

If you live near the countryside or have a garden, it is possible that the ants have crept into your pet’s feeder more than once. Your pet may refuse to eat or, in the worst case, cause an infestation inside the home. Therefore, you should protect your dog’s food so that insects do not sneak into the house. A good solution is to create an artificial barrier that ants cannot get through and that is not harmful to pets or wild birds.

Correctly store feed

Store your pet’s food in sealed containers such as coffee cans, zip-lock storage bags, or lunch boxes. These containers will help keep ants out and create a barrier against insects.

Also, if possible you should use a trough with a pit (similar to a cake pan). The lower part with water will act as a barrier and will keep the ants away, while your furry can calmly feed on the upper part.

Change the feeder and clean the area

Another option to keep insects away is to move the feeder around for several days. Little by little, the ants will stop coming to the place where your pet usually fed. Of course, it is essential that you keep the area where the food is located clean. You could put down a tablecloth and remove it after meals to clean it, since ants track food sources.

If you clean the surface on which you place the feeder (and the plate itself) with soap and water, you will prevent the ants from returning.

Buy ant-proof feeders

Although there are cheaper solutions, there are ant-proof pet feeders on the market. They can be purchased in some pet stores and online stores. These feeders are designed for indoor and outdoor use, so you will have to choose the one that best suits your pet.

It is also possible to buy independent pits in which to place your dog’s feeder, thus protecting the food from insects.
