The Russian hamster comes from southwestern Siberia and the eastern regions of Kazakhstan, Manchuria, and Mongolia. This rodent is, within the hamster breeds classified as dwarfs, the most widespread among households in half the world due to its great docility and sociability. Of course, it does not coexist well as a couple of the same sex since it is very territorial and will end up fighting with the other specimen. It is also not recommended that you live with a hamster of the opposite sex since the females are very prolific.
It is a nocturnal animal, that is why we will hear it running on its wheel in the wee hours of the morning. During the day he will spend many hours sleeping, do not bother him, he needs that rest that he has not had at night!
The Russian, Siberian or also called djungarian dwarf hamster measures from 7 to 11 cm and reaches 35-50 grams in weight . Their coat can be of three different colorations: gray with a dark stripe on the back, sapphire (very soft gray / bluish) with or without the line on the back, and a mixture of pearl and sapphire. When winter comes, the Russian hamster’s hair becomes lighter and thicker. The end of this process is characterized by the fact that the animal ends up with a lot of white hair on its body. This is so because in nature it would have to camouflage itself in the snow and protect itself from the tremendous cold of its habitat.
When choosing the home for your Russian hamster, a terrarium, tupper or methacrylate cage will always be more advisable than a conventional cage, since in this there are more risks that they will hurt their legs or that they nibble insistently on the bars and also hurt their snouts. However, in a low cage that does not have bars on the ground and the rest are horizontal , you will not have any problem as long as you do not have the mania to gnaw on them. In addition, the bars will help him climb, which the Russian hamster loves, and exercise.
