How to care for a Rottweiler puppy

Rottweilers are very intelligent, courageous and affectionate dogs. If you decide to adopt one, it will undoubtedly be your companion for life. In addition, a properly bred Rottweiler puppy becomes a great canine citizen as well as a faithful friend. However, these dogs require a lot of training, so they are not a suitable breed for first time owners. With patience and training your Rottweiler will grow up healthy and happy.

Take long walks

Rottweilers are very active, so you will need to give your dog at least two thirty-minute walks each day. Large breed dogs need a lot of exercise to release energy and stay healthy. If your puppy is still too young (less than six months old) make sure he has at least four or five sessions of play or exercise each day. As he gets older, you can start taking longer walks.

On the other hand, it is also important that you give your Rottweiler toys that keep his mind active. In this way, you will be preventing him from getting bored and, therefore, from doing mischief at home. A good option is toys that can be filled with food or treats.

Socialize at a young age

From when they are up to three weeks old, puppies need to be close to their mother to learn normal dog socialization. However, after three or four weeks, puppies accept new stimuli such as walks in the fresh air or encounters with other pets or people.

If your puppy was taken away from his mother and litter at birth, he may be adjusting poorly and not enjoying contact with other dogs.

Sign him up for training classes

If, despite walks and early socialization, you can’t get your dog to get along with other pets, the best thing you can do is sign him up for dog training classes. There your pet will be exposed to other puppies and people as well as a variety of sounds, sights and smells.

This, in addition to helping your pet socialize with other dogs, will give you the opportunity to bond with your Rottweiler. Ask your trusted veterinarian to recommend a dog trainer or seek information from an animal shelter.

It’s normal for you to stress out at first, as training a puppy takes time, patience, and effort. However, little by little it will become a routine and you will be able to strengthen the relationship with your pet.
