The cougar, mountain lion or American lion is a native American carnivorous mammal. In the past, it extended from the Yukon (Canada) to the Strait of Magellan (South America), which is why local tribes and researchers have different names for it. In fact, this feline is known as the cat of many names since it has more than 80 different nicknames. However, it is necessary to clarify that pumas are not wildcats, jaguars, cheetahs, leopards or lynxes.
In general, pumas stand out for their slightly yellow fur, long tail and round face. Males can reach eight feet in length, while females grow to about two meters. In addition, males weigh between 50 and 80 kilograms, unlike females who weigh a maximum of 60 kilograms.
These felines are able to get used to different habitats, which is why they live in Central and South America. Also, unlike other cats, cougars do not live in packs. These animals prefer to live alone in large territories, since they need space to hunt enough food and survive.
On the other hand, cougars are twilight animals. This means that they only hunt during the hours of sunrise and sunset. Thus, their incredible vision gives them a clear advantage during these times of the day.
