How to properly bathe a cat

Although cats are very clean pets, they do need to be bathed from time to time. Your kitten may get into a muddy place, or his coat just requires it. In any case, most cats do not usually react well to the bath, since it causes them too much stress. Therefore, if you want the moment of the bath to be calmer, here are some tips.

Trim your cat’s nails

Your cat could get scared when you bathe him, so it is essential that you cut his nails first. Try doing this a few hours before or even days before so that you have time to relax. Of course, you should be very careful when cutting your nails, as you could hurt or cause bleeding.

Also, giving your cat treats as a reward for getting her nails trimmed will help her feel calmer the next time.

Brush her hair well

This step is essential and you should never skip it. Brushing helps remove knots from their fur, which are more difficult to remove when the cat is wet. If your cat likes to be brushed, you can use it to make him feel more comfortable in the bathroom.

In fact, brushing can also be a good way to distract him if you want to trim his nails. Of course, you will need the help of another person.

Prepare the cat for the bath

You must tire your cat so that it is as relaxed as possible before entering the water. That will make it less likely to bite you or try to escape. You can also choose a time when the kitten is calmer, such as after eating.

If he’s still very nervous, put some special toys just for bath time, like a wind-up mouse or a floating duck. Only give these toys when you go to bathe him, so that he associates the bath with something positive and stops being afraid.

Bath time

Speak in a calm voice to your cat while you groom it. He may try to get out of the tub, so it’s important that you do your best to keep him still and relaxed. Also, if you can, use a harness to hold him securely in the tub. With the harness you can hold him without having to grab him by the neck, which could hurt him.

You will need to wet your cat from the neck down, using a little shampoo to wash its body, legs, belly, and tail. It starts at the neck and works towards the tail in the direction of hair growth. Act like you are stroking him and the moment in the bathtub is nothing special.

Rinse the kitten as many times as necessary. Next, take a damp cloth and gently wipe it over her face, removing the fur from her eyes and nose. Rub him with the washcloth or cloth until his face, head, and ears are clean enough.

Dry him well and reward him

To dry him, take a towel and wipe as much water as you can from his fur. Then wrap the cat and rub it gently. If the towel is too wet, switch to a dry one and keep massaging it. Also, if your cat is long-haired you will have to use a dryer to finish drying it. Avoid using heat and keep the blow dryer about eight inches away from his fur, as you could burn him and cause more trauma.

Finally, ask your cat to want to bathe again and associate it in a positive way. Wet food, catnip, or snacks are a great option.
