It is a mistake to think that foods that are healthy for humans are healthy for animals and, specifically, for hamsters, which are pets with delicate health. Many of our foods are so harmful to these little furry ones that they can even cause death and that is why it is important that you be clear about which ones are dangerous and which ones are not.
At present there are about nine breeds of domestic hamsters and each of them will be more vulnerable to some foods or others. We are going to expose toxic foods for hamsters in general. However, it is recommended that you inform yourself of the peculiarities and basic care that your rodent species has to avoid displeasure.
These animals have a specific diet that is based on seeds, some fruits and vegetables. Although they are delighted to try any other type of food, it is not recommended that we play at giving him bits of what we are not sure he will tolerate.
How do I feed my hamster? Their diet is not expensive nor does it require much care. Use special feed for them that are composed of dehydrated fruits and vegetables and also nuts. Also, you can opt for always fresh fruits and vegetables that you can choose from: cucumber, tomato, carrot, apple, banana, corn, cauliflower, beans, pear, zucchini, and more. Instead, never give them sweet foods because even if they love them it will hurt them. Also, fat doesn’t suit them either.
Instead, it is recommended that you add protein to your diet. Some feeds already include them among all their ingredients but if not, you can always choose to give your pet a piece of dog biscuit, a live food such as mealworms or egg yolk.
Of course, even if you are giving him a food that is good for him, clean the remains when he does not want more because that way you will avoid bacteria and infections. And never give him food seasoned with any spices because they are very harmful to them. Don’t even feed him food with salt!
Here are some forbidden foods for your hamster. In any case, there are other foods that are not suitable for them either. Therefore, always consult with a veterinarian or expert if you are thinking of giving him a new food.
