Gordon is the oldest wine bar in London. Established in 1890, it is open daily in a basement near Charing Cross Station. The ceiling is low and the comfortable alcove seating makes it one of London’s most beloved basements. Nobody wants it to change and there is an uproar every time there are rumors that it will have to close. There is hot and cold food, with daily specials, as well as an excellent selection of cheeses.

This popular basement in Covent Garden Market is probably best known as the wine bar in the square with outdoor seating alongside live opera singers. In addition to lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, Crusting Pipe also offers a selection of British cheese to accompany its extensive wine list. Pairing your eight-cheese British cheese board with wine is a wonderful and delicious way to spend an evening with friends. You can choose less than eight cheeses or try paired wines by the glass, which made it almost educational. Crusting Pipe is now part of Davy’s group of wine bars.

Le Beaujolais is reportedly the first French wine bar to be established in London, and while it’s small, its excellent selection of wines and cheeses keeps it perennially popular, so get there early. The staff can help you with wine choices and you can even taste them before ordering a bottle. The bar plays blues and jazz music, but not too loud so you can chat with friends over a bottle of wine. There is a members only restaurant on the ground floor.
