Petticoat Lane Market in London

Petticoat Lane Market was established over 400 years ago by French Huguenots who sold petticoats and lace at stalls. Prudish Victorians changed the name of Lane and the market to avoid referring to women’s underwear. Although the street was renamed Middlesex Street in the early 1800s, it is still known today as Petticoat Lane Market.

Monday through Friday, the Petticoat Lane Market is on Wentworth Street, but on Sundays it runs much longer. The market is known for its leather goods, plus you’ll also find bargain-priced chain store clothing, watches, junk jewelry, and toys.

Sobre Petticoat Lane Market

Petticoat Lane Market has been held in the area since at least the 1750s and now has more than 1,000 market stalls on Sundays.

Leather jackets are the specialty at the upper end of the market (near Aldgate East) and the rest of the market is filled with bargain clothing. Market traders buy end-of-season lines in bulk and sell them at steep discounts. Women’s fashion is always popular here.

Besides clothing, you can also find a good variety of toys and electronic items such as stereos, radios, DVD and video players, as well as shoes and bric-a-brac.
