An hour with Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy and its creators at E3 2021: everything we wish Marvel's Avengers had been

Rumors were in the air, but you can never trust and, in this case at least, I wanted to get carried away. On the other side of the screen, in the Square Enix cloud, which is undoubtedly the surprise that I have celebrated the most in recent months. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is not only a reality, it is also everything we asked of Marvel’s Avengers .

While it is true that we will always have the excuse of Marvel’s Spider-Man , its sequel, and the Spider-Man games that got us there, the level of Marvel games has always had more than nostalgia, and surrender to whatever it is. , that a treatment like the one that the fans deserve.

The Marvel game we deserve

Just a couple of sequences and another couple of jokes are enough for me to understand to what extent Eidos-Montréal has nailed to perfection what any fan of the Guardians of the Galaxy could wish for. I’m impressed with how, unlike with Square Enix ‘s previous Marvel game, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy goes down my throat without needing any liquid to swallow.

I like their graphics, the modeling of their characters convince me, their jokes make me smile and even their combat, which does not seem like the reinvention of the wheel but has enough ideas to get attention, awakens me a tremendous desire to have a controller in the hands .

It is difficult not to perceive that there is more pampering and affection here than eyes circling while a dollar symbol spins at high speed. There is more to ” we are going to make a game that is up to it” than ” we are going to make a game with which we are going to get rich . Something that, in addition, is obvious with the approach they have prepared.

This is a solo adventure with a beginning and an end in which all the unlockables, almost 40 skins , will be found by exploring each of the levels that we visit. No plans for DLC and no micropayments. The opposite of what all industry CEO Excels have marked in red and with a Clippy alert if you miss a check tick.

For fans of the Guardians of the Galaxy (and for those who are not)

With inspiration from the comics as its foundation, the story of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy shakes off the shoulder with the hand of any previous narrative you might find out there, whether from the original source or from the rest of the movies and animated series published up to the date.

We are in a galaxy trying to overcome a war whose aftermath has ravaged the population for years, and we control a Peter Quill who has recently assembled a team of brains to make a living as heroes for hire.

As the leader of the group, we will not only fight alongside him – now we are going to do that – but we will also have to act as a guide trying to become the glue of some pieces that seem to repel each other based on mistrust in the best of cases, and insults and wanting head off at worst of them.

Hand in hand with cinematics and situations that demand our opinion, we will decide who is right or what is the next step in our adventure to shape the story and the relationship with the Guardians. Although we will all enjoy the same beginning and end, what will take us there will be a path that we will shape as we please with surprises and changes that will be visualized in the short and long term.

The good news is that, far from trying to lengthen the story unnecessarily – and although it has the option of a New Game + -, at all times we can go to past decisions to see how the sentence affects future battles or conversations. No need to replay the game 20 times to be able to enjoy all the roads to its climax.

A combat system with good ideas

With constant conversations and bites that will also continue as we wander the planets in search of our next goal, or exploring in search of juicy skins and collectibles, the idea is to convey at all times that Star-Lord is the center of that group, something that it also carries over into combat.

Imagine a brawler with short and long range basic attacks, punching and shooting with Peter’s pistols, which also offers the ability to tell your teammates what the next move they should make.

Depending on the situation, we may need Drax to strike hard to deactivate a shield and then attack us, or take advantage of Gamora’s lethal attacks, or Rocket’s crowd control explosions, or Groot’s protection and healing.

Skills that, also in our case, will improve based on level increases that will allow us to add new perks and actions to Star-Lord’s boots, blasters or armor. One of them, for example, will allow us, after an enemy attack that has finished with our back on the ground, we can crawl out on the ground with our rocket boots while we shoot.

Our role as leader even reaches the special attacks that, based on a large list of songs from the 80s (30 licensed songs) that we can use to motivate the group, we will use the lyrics of the song as a speech. If we nail it, we will all earn a buff. If we fail, it will be only us who will come up with such a great song.

A promising adventure to close the year

With the collection of usual improvements aimed at making sense of the new generation – photo mode, dynamic resolution, 60fps at 1080p or 4K at 30fps – Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will arrive on October 26 with the intention of closing the year for everything. top.

It remains to be seen how much of this initial enthusiasm continues until the game’s launch, but that it has become one of the games to watch in 2021 is already huge news that we should celebrate.

Even large corporations have the opportunity to redeem themselves and, in addition to aiming to be a great game and a love letter to fans, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy also seems to reach out to Square Enix after the decisions made with Marvel’s Avengers . If it is based on reconciliations like this, they can be wrong all they want. Apologies more than accepted.
