Backward compatibility has always been a sweet tooth that helps digest the generation change. And it is that after acquiring a lot of games for several years, it is difficult to jump to a new platform that still has a lot to prove.
That’s why PS2 was compatible with PS1 games, and that’s why early PS3s were also compatible with PS2 games. But the good, this time, did not last long and in view of the need to cut costs it was decided to progressively eliminate the ability to play previous generation games.
But it seems that things may be changing and that is that Sony has patented new software that manages to perfectly emulate the mythical “Emotion Engine”, the central processor of the no less mythical PS2 . And if they basically emulate the console … it would not be blatant to think that through a software update our PS3 can do the same.
The patent was registered in December and it has been now when it has seen the light, although the most skeptics do not believe that Sony will decide to release its new gem just like that. Moreover, we could be before the previous step for Sony to give the green light to the distribution of PS2 titles in the PStore.
Hopefully they will distribute, in the vein of ‘VidZone’ or ‘Home’, an official system to play all the PS2 games that we still keep and that we have had to forget in pursuit of the new generation. Although to be honest … it looks more like that soon we will be able to “buy” again online those games that we already bought on physical media years ago.
They certainly know how to get money from under rocks.
