The Tacoma B&I is one of the icons of the city; however, he is an unknown hero from the past who today receives little attention from most passersby. And there is a reason for that. This formerly popular local attraction is a bit run down these days, and perhaps a bit strange to some with its often quiet lounges and eclectic mix of shops and stores. Still, this structure is a part of Tacoma history and is still worth a visit due to its quirky interior. If you like the economy, the B&I could offer a satisfying shopping experience that is much more unique than going to the mall.
B & I history
The B&I was originally opened as a hardware store in 1946 by owners EL Irwin and ML Bradshaw. Over time, the store added more and more non-hardware related items: in 1948, a carousel; in 1953, an elephant named Sammy; and then some chimpanzees named Cathy and Murphy.
At a time when all of Tacoma was vying for the best Christmas light displays, THE Irwin even received the best display one year for a 35-foot carousel atop the B&I with six reindeer mounted on it, as well as a 12-foot foot. Fireplace complete with Santa.
With the many animals and attractions here, it became known as the B&I Circus Tent and was known for its festive atmosphere. In the 1960s, the store began hosting regular appearances by celebrities, including Sheena, Queen of the Jungle, Burt Ward from the TV show “Batman,” and boxer Joe Louis.
Finally, during this era, it was Ivan the gorilla who made the most famous shop. Ivan was brought to the B&B in 1964 as a baby and lived in an enclosure built specifically for him for 28 years. After having no other contact with gorillas for his entire life, he caught the attention of animal activists and was transferred to the Atlanta Zoo. Tacoma natives can still remember visiting Ivan.
Today, the building’s history is featured on the walls of some areas of the B&B, including all of Ivan’s empty compound. While the B&B no longer attracts shoppers and families in droves, it’s still worth a visit – see this historic place in person and give a little nod to an often-forgotten past as the people of Tacoma pass through South Tacoma. Way without so much as a look at this once glorious attraction.
The B&I Today
Located in South Tacoma, the B&B is home to mostly corridors dotted with shops and restaurants. You may find the B&I scarce and mostly empty, or it may be crowded with shoppers, depending on the day. The stores are primarily run by merchants just starting out on the business scene, but you will also find stores that have been here for years. Here you will find all kinds of cool items: wigs, dresses, sports memorabilia, art, and more. The selection is unique and you won’t find absolutely any chain stores here.
There is even a pet store here, which you are unlikely to see elsewhere. Puppies, kittens, bunnies, reptiles, birds and more live here.
As you wander the halls, you will find pieces of B&I history left here and there to commemorate and honor the past; It is worth stopping to read or take a look, as what the B&I is today is very different from how it started.
One of the most popular aspects of B&I is its game room, something that is not always found everywhere anymore. This one is big and full of nostalgic video games and arcade food. If you appreciated arcades in the 1980s, this one is worth a visit.
There are also several restaurants; again, no chains, just independent businesses. Food ranges from authentic Mexican to Indian and American.
