An iceberg the size of Malta breaks off Antarctica

A gigantic iceberg the size of Malta (it is over 300 square kilometers) has broken off the Pine Island Glacier in Antarctica. The ESA has released a video in which with up to 57 radar images captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission between February 2019 and February 2020, we can see how quickly the cracks increased and that they have led to this outcome of a huge iceberg fragmented into pieces. The largest piece has been named B-49.

Antarctic glaciers such as Pine Island or Thwaites have been losing ice for more than 25 years.
