Who has not ever dreamed, perhaps in their crazy youthful years, of leaving home one day and going around the world in search of fame, glory and adventure ? The truth is that, on paper, the idea sounds very good but in real life not everything is so easy. To emulate these experiences, role-playing games were born and, over time, RPG video games ( Rol Playable Games ).
In books, comics, movies, songs … Those media that tell a story usually have as their main objective not only to entertain the public, but to make them believe what is being told . If a story gets people to get into it and really live it (they empathize with the characters or what happened affects them) it is much more likely that they will end up enjoying it and even mark them as one of those unforgettable epics that we have all read in some place. moment. But this is not always achieved and, perhaps to bring the public closer to the story, role-playing games and the like emerged and became popular.
Imagination is a powerful weapon and if used in the right way, it can do amazing things. Role-playing games such as the popular Dungeons and Dragons are those in which the player’s intervention and freedom go far beyond what is usual since they are encouraged to be part of the story, to be introduced to it. These types of board games reached their peak in the 70s and 80s and could be considered an update of the games that we all played as children in which we played a role (a role). Another example of these techniques by which the user is part of the story are the books of the type “Choose your adventure”.
With the passage of time and the appearance of new forms of entertainment, video games ended up seeing the possibilities of adapting the style of role-playing games to their world . A video game, after all, allows the player to participate in an already established story, but what if they were also allowed to decide where they want things to go or rewrite it? This is how RPGs were born and they did it to stay (this is confirmed by the success of Dark Souls , Skyrim , Pokémon , World of Warcraft , Final Fantasy or The Witcher ).
Focusing on fantastic RPGs, we wanted to compile a general recipe of the main elements that characterize and make a role-playing video game memorable .
