Although they are rare, on several occasions we have shared stories of babies who have not been able to wait to get to the hospital and end up being born in the car.
Today’s story is one more car birth, but with a slight twist: while the mother gave birth, the father drove to the hospital supported by Tesla’s autopilot .
Yiran and Keating Sherry are a couple from Philadelphia who were expecting their second baby. One morning, after having contractions during the night, Yiran’s water broke while washing clothes.
Although she thought she had more time, her husband, who was getting his oldest son ready to take him to school, decided it was best to go straight to the hospital. And without a doubt, he was not wrong.
As they made their way to the hospital, Yiran’s contractions were getting stronger, but the traffic did not progress much because it was the time when dozens of parents took their children to classes.
Seeing that the baby could not wait any longer, Keating decided to activate the automatic pilot of his car, a Tesla, so that he could help his wife more:
” I figured my responsibility as a husband was to make sure my wife got to the hospital safely. That was goal number one. Although when she was in labor, I would get that deadly handshake from her […] Occasionally I put the car on autopilot so I could attend to her, check on our son Rafa in the back seat, to make sure he was okay, “says Kearing.
Although the journey to the hospital was only twenty minutes, the baby was born just as they were reaching the entrance of the building . Hospital nurses rushed in and cut the umbilical cord with Yiran and her baby still in the car.

Fortunately, everything went well and both Yerin and her little girl, whom they named Maeve Lily, are at home enjoying the Christmas holidays with their family.
