Asian giant bees ( Apis dorsala ) make their nests outdoors and need to keep potential predators, such as hornets, away. That is why they have developed synchronized movements that, seen from the outside, draw a large spiral wave .

Australian and British scientists have recorded them in a series of videos to try to analyze how they get this phenomenon to start at any point in the nest and spread in just a fraction of a second to the rest of the colony. The only area where the movement does not spread is the so-called "mouth of the nest" , located on the left in the film, which is where the collecting bees leave and arrive. The findings are published today in the PloS ONE magazine.
