You only need ten minutes with a ragdoll cat to fall madly in love with this breed. They are one of the perfect cats to live with children because they are so affectionate and docile. It could change their minds to those who say that “I am not very catlike” and not only because sometimes these animals adopt dog behaviors such as going to receive you at the door of the house but because they will give you so much affection that you will even have than tell him to stop chasing you around the house. This is the ragdoll cat, a feline that can weigh 10 kilos and measure almost a meter from its whiskers to its tail.
Its origin is highly questioned but it is said that they arose in California in the 60’s and that they became an official breed from the 70’s. The person responsible for its creation was a woman named Ann Backer, who crossed her white angora cat with a Burmese cat. From this cross, some kittens emerged with very peculiar characteristics: blue eyes and beautiful long silky hair (which sometimes generates hairballs in their intestines). Backer continued to cross the litters until he achieved the traits he was looking for in the offspring to create a pure line.
The ragdoll are born totally white and from one week of life the colors appear on their mantle. But even though the pattern in its coat comes out soon, it can take up to three years for this breed to fully reach its physical development. Many cat lovers say that this animal seems to bring together the best of each breed: the calm character of the Persian, the beautiful fur of the Angora and the robust and healthy body of the Norwegian forest.
Do you want to know a very curious fact? “Ragdoll” means in English “rag doll” and it was given that name because this breed has a very special characteristic . When you hold a dog in your arms, immediately loosen the muscles and drop its weight. For this reason, when the breed was still young they were thought to be immune to pain.
