Whether it occurs in all species has not been proven, but some animals, such as rats , are known to dream. A group of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , the famous MIT, showed that these rodents have complex dream experiences. Apparently, the rats with which they experimented dreamed of the activity they had been doing during the day, such as running through a cornfield, since in both situations – awake and asleep – their brains showed the same type of neuronal activation in the hippocampus , the area associated with memory . The results were so clear that scientists could even find out where in the cornfield the animal was during sleep, or if it was moving in it.
Experts indicate that perhaps these patterns could be repeated in all mammals , since they share the neural structures that make dreams possible.
