Dogs and cats defy evacuation order against Florence

The 157 dogs and 51 cats at the Hallie Hill Animal Sanctuary will not evacuate during the storm, even though they are in a mandatory evacuation area off the coast of South Carolina. Jennifer Middleton, executive director of the sanctuary, says the evacuation would be devastating for many of the animals . Some of the animals were sick or traumatized before reaching the sanctuary and others are very old. Middleton and one other member of the team will stay at the sanctuary during the storm.

The sanctuary, about 20 miles west of Charleston, is under a mandatory evacuation order. “We do not want to disrespect the governor. I have to stay and do what's best for the animals, ”Middleton told CNN.
