He brought “Children of Olympus” to the cinema and produced films with Jürgen Roland and Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Hanns Eckelkamp has now died at the age of 94.
Berlin – The film producer Hanns Eckelkamp is dead. He died on August 5th in Berlin at the age of 94, as his son confirmed. Eckelkamp was a member of the German and the European Film Academy. The “Welt” had previously reported.
Eckelkamp, who was born in Münster, opened the first post-war cinema in his hometown in 1946. In the following years he also built or took over six cinemas in Duisburg and Münster. He made his film distribution into a nationwide player through distribution rights to classics such as “High Noon”, “Arsenic and Lace Cap”, “Laurel and Hardy” or “Children of Olympus”.
The semi-documentary film “Polizeirevier Davidswache” by director Jürgen Roland, produced by Eckelkamp in 1964, was a huge public success. Because of the well-known film title, the Hamburg Davidwache was repeatedly added a false fugue-s. Three years earlier, Eckelkamp had already worked as a co-producer on the film adaptation of Heinrich Böll’s post-war story “Das Bread of the Early Years” by director Herbert Vesely.
In this role, Eckelkamp also worked several times with Rainer Werner Fassbinder and produced, for example, “The Marriage of Maria Braun” (1979) or “Lola” (1981). As a co-producer he also acted on “Theo against the rest of the world” with the young Marius Müller-Westernhagen in the lead role (1980). Later he also realized “The Bull and the Girl” with Jürgen Prochnow (1985). dpa
