Sarah Curtis, 32, had been asymptomatic during pregnancy, but tested positive for coronavirus just days before giving birth to twins Kenna and Lissa on July 3, 10 weeks before her due date.
She had to be alone during the delivery, due to hospital restrictions, and after the birth, doctors confirmed that the girls had been born with the virus , transmitted through Sarah’s placenta.
Parents feared the worst after hearing the news, having experienced serious pregnancy complications and the loss of a daughter years ago.
The girls, who weighed 1.3kg, are believed to be the first twins born in the UK with Covid-19 , so the couple’s uncertainty and fears were enormous, though they never lost hope.
The girls have had to stay in the hospital for six weeks, but they have recovered favorably, and are now home healthy and free of coronavirus .
A complicated pregnancy
In 2017, Aaron and Sarah lost their daughter Lottie to sudden death. When they got pregnant again with the twins, they renewed the illusion but did not imagine that their daughters would have to be born in the middle of the global pandemic.
They had a complicated pregnancy due to a prenatal condition known as ‘twin to twin syndrome’, where the two fetuses grow at different rates.
Sarah had to travel nearly 500 kilometers from West Cumberland Hospital to London to undergo laser surgery to correct the problem, where doctors told her that only one of the babies would survive.
Fortunately, it was not. “It was a miracle that they both survived,” said the mother. “In the end, it all paid off. It’s been a surreal year, but we’ve dated two beautiful, healthy girls. ‘
A beautiful story of overcoming that against all odds, ended in a happy ending.
