My tips for viewers

I am not a car collector or a dealer in vintage and classic cars. I enjoy looking at classic vehicles, and during Arizona Auction Week there are several events you can attend. You could say that each one is aimed at a different audience.

A few years ago I attended the Gooding & Company auto auction in Scottsdale. Look at the photos! Here are some tips about the event that may be helpful if you are planning to go as a spectator.

  1. Gooding & Company’s auto auction is relatively new to the Phoenix area. His first classic car auction was held in Scottsdale in 2008.
  2. This event does not have as many cars as some other auctions that take place in the area in what is known as Arizona Auction Week, but they are considered to be of consistent high quality.
  3. Serious collectors attend this auction, but there are many people who do not bid.
  4. I found the sponsors of this event very knowledgeable about cars. Even if they weren’t bidding, the people I contacted wanted to talk about their collection, their relationship to the classic car world, or a particular car they were following.
  1. Still, you don’t need to have any knowledge of classic cars to attend Gooding & Company. After all, it was there! This is a great place to learn about classic cars and the enthusiasts who are actively involved with them.
  2. You can get a Pocket Guide that lists all lots and approximate vehicle values. For photos and extensive descriptions of all the vehicles up for auction, the full-color catalog is available for purchase.
  3. Not all vehicles on display and auctioned here are just for millionaires. There are cars, motorcycles, and specialty vehicles that sell in the low to mid 5-figure range.
  1. You may think there are no bargains here, but many of the vehicles are auctioned without reservation (no minimum bid required).
  2. This is a particularly masculine and mature crowd. You can get an idea of the typical clientele for this auction from my photos. It is not really considered a family outing. This is not a place for children.
  3. Standard attire for this event would best be described as business or resort casual. I saw women in little black dresses and men in suits with bow ties. I saw shorts and flip flops. Most of the outfit was somewhere in between.
  1. If you are a spectator and not a bidder, you cannot sit in the reserved sections on the day of the auction. Take a spot at the back of the room. Seats are scarce about 15 minutes before the auction starts.
  2. I found the auction as enjoyable as looking at and reading about all the vintage and vintage cars. Follow in your pocket guide to see which cars are selling at your anticipated price and which bidders get a bargain. The auctioneer is very easy to understand and adds personality to the procedures.
  1. What you won’t find: crafts or trinkets. If you are looking for neon signs for your arcade or die-cast toy cars, you are at the wrong auction.
  2. Food and beverages, including alcoholic beverages, are available for purchase.
  3. If you need an excuse to get out of town during the canine days of summer, the Gooding & Company auction they’re best known for takes place on Pebble Beach in August.
