This type of diet could be beneficial for the bones, according to a recent research carried out by the University of Granada (Spain), which would help the elderly and postmenopausal women to control their level of calcium in the bones .
Throughout the study, published in the journal Food & Function , the researchers examined the effects of a normoprotein and a hyperprotein diet on the bone status of a group of male Wistar rats , divided into four groups. Each group received a different diet for a total of 12 weeks: normoprotein diet with soy protein, normoprotein diet with whey protein; high protein diet with soy protein and high protein diet with protein based on whey.
After this period, the scientists discovered that the rats fed a high protein diet maintained their bone properties better than those that followed a normal protein diet; Furthermore, the group that ingested vegetable protein, with soy protein, increased their calcium level in their bones by up to 7% . The researchers caution that the results obtained have yet to be confirmed in humans.
“The impact that the amount and type of protein we consume has on our health is a subject that is highly debated by the scientific community , and there is still no agreement on the matter in some aspects; We would recommend studying each particular case by professionals, and addressing it taking into account the advantages and disadvantages of hyperprotein diets and the specific characteristics of each person ”, affirm Virginia A. Aparicio García Molina and Elena Nebot, authors of the study.
