Although frogs and toads look similar, the truth is that they are very different. In fact, they present numerous physical differences such as the color of the skin or the shape of the body. They also have a different behavior, as frogs must always be close to water, while toads can be a little further away. Another curiosity is that frogs tend to jump higher than toads. If you pay a little attention, surely you can easily distinguish a toad from a frog.
Examine your body
You can tell the difference between a frog and a toad by the length of their limbs. So if you can get close enough, take a look at their hind limbs. The hind flippers of frogs are very long, as they jump more often than toads. Also, a toad’s hind limbs are smaller, as toads tend to crawl.
On the other hand, frogs have webbed feet (that is, adapted to the water to be able to submerge and swim) whereas the feet of a toad do not have pads. Another way to distinguish them is by the shape of their body, since toads are small and plump while frogs are larger and thinner.
Likewise, you should observe the color. Frogs are lighter in color than toads, as toads have greener skin . In addition, toads have different shades ranging from dark green to olive green.
Take into account the place
Frogs need to be close to water to survive, while toads can spend a lot of time out of water. For this reason, if it is near the water it will probably be a frog. On the other hand, if it is far from the water, it is possibly a toad, since frogs do not usually move away from the water.
Watch how it jumps
Toads are more likely to crawl than jump. In addition, it is very strange to see a frog crawling, so if the animal crawls it is quite likely that it is a toad (although it should be ruled out that it is not an injured frog).
Also, although both frogs and toads can jump, frogs jump much higher and more frequently. Toads, however, perform very small jumps and do not have the ability to jump very far.
