How many times is a nymph fed?

These birds are very common in some homes because, in addition to being beautiful, they are very sociable. That is why they often coexist easily with parakeets and cockatoos among other birds. And they also get along well with humans.

What you have to keep in mind is that these animals have a reputation for being very easy, precisely because of their sociability. But taking care of them is not as simple a task as it might seem. And one of the aspects that most often worries those who face their care for the first time is food. How many times is a nymph fed? And how to feed a papillera nymph? Let’s see it.

How to feed a nymph?

Keep in mind that nymphs, like any living being, go through different phases throughout their lives. Feeding a nymph that is just a few days old is not the same as feeding an adult nymph that is already more than used to its routines and its habitat.

When we talk about pups, they are called porridge nymphs and at this time they eat special porridge that can be easily found in animal stores. It is recommended that the mixture is always made with bottled mineral water or with filtered tap water to avoid risks.

The porridge is prepared at medium temperature, never exceeding 40 degrees, and it is provided to the nymphs with a special spoon that simulates the beak of the parents. In the case of not being able to acquire one of these spoons, a syringe without a needle can be used, but it is not the ideal solution.

Also keep in mind that you have to do it very carefully because they can choke and cause aspiration pneumonia, which is the first cause of death in porridge birds.

Babies should not be separated from their mothers during the first 20 days, because they help them protect their defenses. But neither should it be postponed much longer or it will be more difficult for them to adapt to the porridge. From here, there are certain recommendations that, although they must be adapted to each situation, can help you:

  • From 1 to 4 days, you should feed your calf every 2 hours, an amount of 1 to 2 ml.
  • From 5 to 7 days, you should feed your calf every 3 hours, an amount between 2 and 3 ml.
  • From 8 to 14 days, you should feed your nymph 5 times a day, an amount between 4 and 6 ml.
  • From 15 to 20 days, you should feed your nymph 4 times a day, an amount between 7 and 10 ml.

The ideal is to prepare a table with the age (days), the fasting weight and the ml that you give in each dose. Everything must be increasing. You can ask your vet to help you prepare it.

In any case, if you consider that your nymph has strange behavior, stops eating or does not accept the porridge well, you can always consult a veterinarian specialized in exotics.

When does a nymph start eating alone?

Her independence with food will depend on when the nymph has been separated from her mother and how long she has been eating the porridge well. It does not usually have the strength to eat on its own until at least a month and a half of life. And on many occasions you have to wait a few more days.

From here you can start eating some adult food and fresh fruit pieces for him to start snacking and tasting.

The idea is to introduce the seeds and new food and when we see that it is pecking, we remove portions of porridge to encourage it to eat its food.

The more quantity you eat by itself, the less porridge you will need. Little by little you can increase one to decrease the other. If there are no problems with the acceptance of food, he will be able to be totally independent when he is a little over two months old.

Keep in mind that they can live between 12 and 18 years, so we are talking about a small effort in a tiny part of their life. It will be worth getting him to eat well.

How many times does an adult nymph eat a day?

It is quite common that when the bird is growing we wonder how many times an adult nymph eats a day. If we have guidance tables for the rearing phase, what do we do when the nymph grows?

The diet of cockatoos in captivity is composed of mixtures of seeds such as millet, flax, wheat, canary seed, rice or oats, green leafy vegetables such as arugula, endives or lamb’s lettuce, and finally fruit, such as strawberries, apples, cherries, peaches, pears…

If we try to achieve a perfect diet for a nymph, we should give it a variety of three vegetables a day and at least three fruits a week. But don’t get obsessed with these data, as long as the nymph has a varied diet it will be enough.

Ideally, you provide him with food and leave it hanging in the cage or put a little in his feeding dish. It will be the nymph who decides what and when to eat.
