If you have a puppy or elderly dog, it may be difficult for him to jump and access some areas of the house. Also, if your dog usually sleeps with you in bed (and he is too old) it is not a bad idea to build him some stairs for pets. In this way, your four-legged friend will be able to get to all the places better without having to make so much effort. Also, although there are many options in pet stores, building your own stairs can be fun and cheaper. You will need plywood, dowels, risers, nails, a hammer, a tape measure, wood glue, and a saw.
Make marks on the wood
Lay one of the side boards on a flat table. Next, choose a corner to be the bottom face of the ladder and, with the help of a yardstick, make a pencil mark 15 centimeters above the corner. Next, place another mark on the wood 8 inches at the top back corner.
When you have marked the boards, you will need to place a square or ruler on the board to draw a line between the two marks. Press down on the square with one hand and trace along the edge with a pencil, creating a firm line.
Next, you should place the board on an easel and cut the marked line with a saw. Set your saw to one side of the marked line, then turn it on and slowly cut into the wood. When you’re done, repeat the entire process with the other side board. Of course, you will have to wear gloves and protective glasses.
Tread installation
When you have completed these steps, you will need to place your plywood side board on a work surface. Locate the lower front corner and measure a distance of 1.9 centimeters. Next, apply special wood glue to the widest side of the horizontal tread and position it so that the leading edge is aligned with the measured distance (1.9 centimeters).
Next, you will have to place the remaining studs using the first one as a guide. With the first block, the rest should snap into place easily. Next, you will have to finish the support structure of the stairs by placing the horizontal tread.
Lastly, you will need to nail the dowels to the board, securing each strip with nails. Use about three or four nails per stud and space them as evenly as possible. Then repeat the entire installation process with the other side board.
Assembling the stairs
Apply wood glue to the front edge of the vertical slats. Next, put a vertical riser on it and make sure the riser is level. Do the same with the other two risers and vertical slats.
When you have completed this step, you will need to attach the horizontal risers to the horizontal slats. You will also need to secure the riser with finishing nails. Lastly, you will need to nail the support board to the top of the ladder. The board should be flush against the side boards and the horizontal riser. You already have your ladder!
