Like us, dogs feel cold in winter (especially when they go out for walks). Many people believe that pets can withstand the cold because they are covered in fur. And while it helps keep them warm in a way, sometimes they need more protection to withstand the temperatures. Therefore, if you have pets you must learn to protect them during the winter so that they stay warm and safe.
Limit time outdoors
During the winter, it is imperative that you limit the time your pet spends outdoors. Most pets that live indoors are not used to cold temperatures and wind. Therefore, you must make sure that they do not spend more time outside the necessary (especially on days of rain or extreme cold).
If possible, play with your pet indoors. You can throw the rope, the ball, or just make him look for his favorite toy. In addition, the cold could cause injury to the pads of your dog, so you will have to check the paws daily.
Put on a coat
Coats are essential in winter, especially during cold spells or windy days. If you have a small breed or short-haired dog, you will need to put it on before going for a walk. In addition, cats and dogs can also be cold indoors, so if you notice that your pet is shivering you should also put it on.
Likewise, the nose, ears and legs suffer the most damage during cold weather. Therefore, you should cover these areas on cold days or modify outdoor activities.
Provide blankets
Even if your pet lives indoors, it could get cold, especially when sleeping. Give her a blanket to snuggle up to on her bed and move her basket to a warm place in the house, away from drafty windows or doors.
If your dog usually sleeps on the floor, you should provide him with a blanket or basket to keep him warm. The ground can hold in the cold and make your furry friend get more cold than necessary, even making them sick.
Does your pet live abroad?
If your pet spends a lot of time outside (like some cats, who tend to go out for a walk) it is best to take it inside during cold storms. You could find him a room or even retrofit the garage. Remember that the cold is harmful even for animals that spend a lot of time outdoors.
However, if you cannot house your pet indoors for any reason, you will have to offer it a shelter. You could build a kennel or shed in which your dog is protected from the wind and rain. In addition, your pet should be able to enter, sit and lie down comfortably.
