How to teach a child to ride a horse

If you want to teach a child to ride a horse, it is essential that you show him all the aspects related to safety and technique. Horseback riding is a fun and very beneficial sport for the little ones. In addition, although it may be difficult at first, surely with patience and training they will end up learning.

The child’s clothing

Before receiving his first lesson or his first walk, the child will have to dress appropriately. Pants must be long and shoes must be closed (boots or sneakers). Of course, the child will have to wear a helmet. Many stables provide helmets, but you should ask to be sure. If you have sensitive skin, it is also a good idea to wear gloves.

Get acquainted with the horse

In order for the child to feel comfortable with the horse, he should first stroke it and get to know it. Approach the horse from one side, preferably from the left side. Horses love to have their necks scratched, so you might as well get close to this area. You can also ask the horse owner or instructor if they can give the horse a treat before riding. However, sometimes it is preferable to wait until the end to reward it.

How to guide the horse

When you are going to learn to guide the horse, the child will have to stand on the left side of the horse. You should have the reins in your hands, not on the horse’s head. It is important that you do not hold it too tightly and that you do not wrap the reins in your hands.

The minor should walk forward and the horse should follow. If he resists, the best thing is for the child to say something like “come on!” and move the string slightly.

Get on the saddle

If you can, give him a mounting block so he can learn to get on the horse from the ground, especially the first time he rides. You will have to stand to the left of the horse and put the reins on the animal’s head, holding it with your left hand and also grabbing a piece of the mane. Remember that horses do not have nerves in their mane, so it will not hurt.

Then you will have to place your left foot on the stirrup, trying not to land too hard on the horse’s back. Finally, you must place your right foot on the stirrup and hold the reins with both hands.

Your teacher’s instructions

The child will need an instructor by his side at all times to supervise him. Whether you are taking a riding lesson or taking a ride on a friend’s pony, it is essential that the child follow the instructions of a professional.

It is also important that you tell the instructor if the child is feeling nervous or scared, as he can help him overcome his fears.
