How to train a mini pig

Pigs are intelligent, funny and loving animals. If you are thinking of adopting a mini pig, you will need to train it to use a litter box. In addition, it is essential that he remains in his cage until he is sufficiently trained. Remember that an animal is a long-term commitment, so you must be patient with your pig and provide all the necessary care.

Choose a litter box

Like cats, pigs can be trained to use a litter box. However, this will need to be wide enough so that the pig can turn completely around. If your pig is small, you can use a plastic storage box or a normal cat litter box. On the other hand, if your pig is bigger you could try a plastic pool for small children.

Also, once your pig has learned to use the litter box, it won’t want you to move it around. The litter box should be in the right place (like the laundry room or bathroom), as you may not be able to move it later.

On the other hand, clumped litter is not good for pigs as they tend to eat it. Pine shavings are a great option, but you can also use paper pellets, layers of newspaper, or any other easy-to-find, non-harmful material.

Use a cage and leash

It is imperative that you keep the pig in a cage until it is tame. Some pigs take longer than others, so you will need to be patient. In fact, don’t expect your mini pig to be fully tame before six months of age.

Also, to help the pig adjust to going to the bathroom, it is important that you remove it from the cage on a leash. This way, the pig will know that it is going to relieve itself and that it cannot be distracted by doing other things along the way.

Once your piggy has gone to the bathroom, you should praise him with good words. Use a cheerful tone so that the pig understands that he has done a good job.
