Normally, the temperature of dogs is between 38 and 39 degrees. However, our four-legged friends could develop a fever due to an injury, an infection, a poisonous substance, or even a reaction to a vaccine. In addition, fever in dogs starts from 39 degrees (that is, when it rises above this temperature) so you should worry about your pet and treat it properly. Of course, you will need to take him to the vet as soon as possible and keep him hydrated at all times.
How to lower the temperature
Wipe your pet with a damp cloth over his paws and ears. You will have to make sure that the cloth is warm, that is, neither too cold nor too hot. In addition, you should also wipe his chest and abdomen to help him lower his body temperature.
Another option is to give your dog a warm bath. Of course, you should check that the water is not cold, but a little warm. Place your pet in the bathtub or bowl and use a sponge to apply water to his ears, legs, chest, and abdomen. After the bath, it is essential that you dry your furry well so that he does not catch a cold. Towel dry or use a hair dryer on a low setting.
Hydrate your pet
Put fresh water in the fountain and encourage him to drink by placing the fountain in front of him. Keep in mind that, like people, dogs need to drink water to avoid dehydration due to fever.
Also, if your dog refuses to drink water or appears dehydrated, you should immediately take him to the vet for treatment. Dehydration, combined with a fever, could make your pet seriously ill. Keep an eye out!
Go to the vet
If, despite all your efforts, you cannot lower your pet’s temperature, the best thing you can do is go to the vet as soon as possible. The fever could be due to an infection, so it is quite likely that you need medication. If you notice that your dog is very down or shows no interest in food or water, he may have a fever (and consequently a health problem that needs treatment).
It is also possible that your dog does not feel like going out to play or that he does not want to take walks as usual. Do not miss these signs and watch your health!
