Organizing your trip to the beach without having to leave your dog at home has been a possible option for some years now, as more and more beaches accept dogs. An experience that is very rewarding for both him and you. What could be better than relaxing on the seashore while playing with your furry best friend? However, it is important that you be careful about drinking salt water, as it could be very harmful to your health.
High temperatures and physical activity are two factors that make your dog feel the need to drink when you are playing on the beach. Therefore, we recommend that you always carry a portable drinker with fresh water to give it. If it does not have it, the dog will resort to what it has more at hand: the salt water of the sea. This could have fatal consequences for him and cause vomiting, dehydration, diarrhea and in very extreme cases, death. The situation could be further complicated if the water intake is accompanied with sand and, as a consequence, the dog would present abdominal discomfort, anorexia and decay.
- Excessive thirst.
- Lack of appetite
- Diarrhea.
- Difficulty walking.
- Tiredness.
- Excessive urination
- Seizures and tremors
If this happens, it is very important that you go to a veterinarian as soon as possible , he will know what to do and can save your dog’s life. From here we always recommend that if you go on vacation with your dog, first of all locate the veterinary clinics closest to the place where you are staying.
- Before leaving, prepare the dog’s backpack: this includes his papers in order, portable waterer, pad protector if we are going to go out with him in very hot hours (there are also some ointments and ointments that serve to protect the pads in these cases ) and bag to collect their excrement. In any case, we recommend that you avoid these hours of strong incidence of the sun on your walks. It is very important that you also include a specific sunscreen for dogs.
- If you want extra protection for your animal, there are some thin t-shirts that you can put on so that the sun’s rays do not damage it.
- Make sure to bring an umbrella so it doesn’t get direct sunlight. In this sense, we must emphasize that it is advisable not to wear it during the central hours of the day as it could suffer a heat stroke.
- Of course, do not lose sight of it at any time if you want to avoid annoyance.
- To make the experience even more satisfying, it would be great if you brought some toys to have fun with him: a fresbee , ball or something similar.
- If you want to bathe, you can do it where there are no currents and in a shallow area.
- When you return home, you should give him a bath with fresh water to remove the traces of salt water and sand from his body. Pay special attention to the ears, it is important that you make sure that there are no traces of sand or water in the area.
- We know that you always take into account the safety measures that must be taken with your dog, but this time we recommend that you leave the muzzle at home for its health. Dogs regulate their temperature by sticking out their tongues, and if you wear a muzzle you won’t be able to do that easily. If you still prefer to wear it to go to the beach, at least make sure it is large enough that it is a basket type, that it has holes.
- Dogs should not have their hair shaved in summer as it acts as a barrier to prevent damage from solar radiation. However, if you did not know and you have shaved it, do not even think about taking it to the beach. Pay special attention if your dog is a Dalmatian, Pit Bull, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Boxer Whippet or is albino as they are the most vulnerable breeds to sun exposure.
- To the water, dogs !: if you are going to spend a lot of time on the beach, it would be advisable to get into the sea every so often to cool off.
- If you want to pamper him a bit, you can also bring sweets as a reward for behaving well and not disturbing other people on the beach.
