Katikati Naturist Park in New Zealand

Katikati Naturist Park is the most exclusive naturist resort in New Zealand. Although it is by no means a 5-star hotel (and there are no cafes or restaurants on-site), it offers the opportunity to be without clothes in a comfortable and friendly environment. This can best be described as a holiday park / camping with some luxurious facilities.

Location and how to get there

The park is located near Katikati in the Bay of Plenty, North Island. It’s about a two hour drive south of Auckland or half an hour north of Tauranga.

As you leave Katikati on the main road heading south, look for Wharawhara Road on the right. About a kilometer down that road, and on the left side, you will see a prominent sign that identifies the park entrance.

General description

The park is in a charming and secluded location, in a sheltered valley and with a stream that crosses the southern boundary. The grounds are well kept and there are nice walks throughout the property.

accommodation

As you would expect from a holiday park, there are sites available for tents, caravans, motorhomes and motorhomes. There are also caravans for rent and a variety of self-contained units, some of which have their own showers, kitchens, and bathrooms.

Facilities

The facilities at Katikati Naturist Park are truly exceptional and much more than what you would get at your average vacation park. The owners have certainly gone to great lengths to make this a pleasant place to stay.

In addition to the communal shower, laundry and kitchen blocks for those not staying in separate units, facilities include:

  • Large pool: it is surrounded by a nice grassy area for sunbathing and relaxing.
  • Spa Pools: There are two spa pools, semi-enclosed within a pergola.
  • Sauna, Mini golf, Pool table, Ping pong table, Trampoline, Bocce, Outdoor chess
  • Wireless internet connection

Food

There are no places to eat on site or even a store where you can buy supplies. However, the town of Katikati is only 3 kilometers away and has a supermarket and some takeaway cafes and bars.

However, if you don’t want to stock up on yourself and it feels like a good meal, you won’t find Katikati very inspiring. The best option for a good restaurant is to travel to Tauranga.

Atmosphere, rules and behavior

Katikati Naturist Park has a very friendly environment. It is a great place to meet interesting people from all over the world as it seems to attract an international crowd. Guests tend to be of all ages; they are predominantly couples, although there are often families there as well.

However, if you just want to stand your ground, that’s perfectly fine too.

The owners have taken care to make sure there are no nasty items by having a few rules. First of all, this is not a clothing optional complex; although being naked is not mandatory (apart from in the pool, spas and sauna), it is expected unless the weather is bad. However, there is no pressure for newcomers to strip off until they are comfortable with the idea, which for most is quicker than they think!

When to visit

Obviously, the best time to enjoy the Katikati Naturist Park is during the summer months. However, the park is in a protected area that has its own microclimate. As a result, it is pleasant at any time of the year. And if it’s a little chilly, there’s always a hot spa to warm up.

If you want to visit in the height of summer (especially January), it is advisable to book in advance. This is a popular place and can often be crowded in January. At other times, the reservation is not essential, but it is recommended, especially for the motel unit.
