Lizards are one of the most curious animals in the world. It is estimated that there are 4,000 species in the world, each with its own characteristics. One of the most interesting facts about them is that they are present on all the continents of planet Earth except Antarctica. Its appearance is very nice and pleasant, and the truth is that it does not deceive because lizards are completely harmless.
Size and skin
The lizard is a small animal, which in adulthood can reach 10 centimeters in length , not counting the tail. In many species the tail is longer than the body itself. There is something that is unknown about lizards, and that is that their tail can come off at the end if they feel threatened in any way.
As for its skin, it is completely covered in small scales . The tones vary according to the species, but in almost all they are green and brown. One of the easiest ways to differentiate males from females is to look at the back: they have dark spots, while females have a series of lines.
Eyelids and ears
Like humans, lizards have eyelids that protect their eyes from dust and other substances present in the natural environment. However, there are some species that do not have eyelids, although they do have a membrane that protects them.
As for the ears, they lack them. So how do they listen? They do it thanks to holes that they have in the head , under the skin.
Sun bath
Sunbathing is very important for lizards as they are cold-blooded animals . After sleeping for a long period of time in their burrow, they seek contact with sunlight. In addition, the sun has a nourishing effect, in a way that favors the proper functioning of your body.
Feeding
Lizards feed on vegetables and small insects , such as ants, crickets, or cicadas. As they are cold-blooded animals, most of their lives are spent sunbathing and foraging for food. What many do is wait for a nearby prey to pass and pounce on it.
Language
Lizards have their own language to communicate with each other. They do it with specific postures and movements. In some species the scales can even change color, which indicates the animal’s state of mind.
