Maybe we have been too harsh on Destruction AllStars, but it cannot be said that he did his part.

What a few months ago promised to be a launch of 80 euros and one of the workhorses in the launch of PS5, arrives today in the form of a free game with micropayments to PS Plus . Destruction AllStars has not been one of those games that generate excessive enthusiasm, and now it is easier to understand why.

Lucid Games’ special powers and cars game had it relatively easy to stand out. The ” gratuitousness ” of its release and the lack of really powerful exclusive releases seemed like the perfect opportunity to find a place out of nowhere as Rocket League did in its day, but right now it is difficult.

A solid foundation to continue working on

It may be difficult to find someone who would have bet everything for everything with Destruction AllStars , but it is no less true that no one takes a sweet tooth. Lacking titles similar to the Destruction Derby with which we grew up -Wreckfest, FlatOut and little else-, this madness of colors and explosions could well be one of those multiplayer that you go to with friends to disconnect after a crooked day.

These are sensations that really stay there for the first few minutes of the tutorial and the first two games. The idea of jumping out of the car at the last moment and picking up another to continue fighting is always satisfactory and, in general, the proposal is original enough to be noteworthy. There are, let’s put it another way, good wickers .

But what you build from there is ultimately what makes the difference, and in that case, it takes Destruction AllStars a couple more laps to finish square and dazzle beyond those first few games.

Chaotic, but not in a good way

The first frontal collision are in the playable . Despite having characters with powers and actions designed to make it easier for you to wreak havoc, squaring those blows is relatively difficult due to excessively large scenarios.

The control of the vehicle does not help and, with a handbrake turn that always ends at 180º, the sensations it transmits are far from satisfactory. A problem that, on the rebound, also ends up infecting some physics that suffer to transfer the impacts to the player. They respond rather little to what a van with a front shield should reflect when carrying a small car.

That the use of powers is anecdotal and the fight for vehicles is resolved regularly – a combination of buttons compared to the ease of pounding the joystick from side to side – also ensure that the choice of characters, except in very specific cases, does not give for much more than the curiosity to find out what it does.

An anecdotal progression system

From there we jump to that second round that the game screams for, the one that invites Lucid’s team to raise an internal debate about whether or not this is a free-to-play game . That you have to pay for the campaigns of each character, a series of fairly well resolved challenges to play alone and better understand the possibilities of each of them, is far from what I would personally consider logical.

The free trial offered for one of them gives a good account of how fun it could be to peek there as a tutorial before jumping into the ring, but it does not seem powerful or interesting enough to claim an investment for it.

Not even the prizes in the form of skins, greetings and other cute things seem to want you to spend money there. Mere changes of colors and animations that little or nothing understand of epic are very far, too much, of any option to embark on their progress system regardless of how fun their games may or may not be.

We don’t lose hope

Fortunately, the room for improvement is enormous and the keys to achieving it seem to be relatively close. For a game that aimed to be a different triple-A, the way they have approached the possibility of exploiting that personality is quite limited .

There have been few that we have seen to fall recently to settle for the right thing and, in fact, Destruction AllStars even has to show whether or not it can climb to that same height before maintaining or starting its particular descent.

I want to believe that the alarms have already gone off with their last minute delay and that the twist that the game needs to finish squaring and start attracting attention is on the way. I would like nothing more than that enthusiasm from the first few minutes with Destruction AllStars to last me a handful of hours more.
