The Andalusian city of Osuna made headlines when it was announced that parts of season 5 of the popular HBO series Game of Thrones would be filmed in the city. Osuna is a convenient day trip from Seville and has a host of sights that will fit the mythical lands of Westeros and Essos.
Osuna is located in the south of Spain, between Seville and Granada, not far from Antequera. It is also on the train line from Seville to Malaga .
Take a guided tour of Game of Thrones filming locations in Seville and Osuna
Now there is a tour you can take that shows you the most famous places in Spain featured on Game of Thrones. See the Alcázar of Seville, featured in scenes by Doran Martell on the hit HBO show, and take an optional extension to the city of Osuna.
Osuna should not be confused with Club Atlético Osasuna, which is a soccer team based in Pamplona, in the north of the country.
How to fit Osuna into your Andalusian itinerary
Osuna is a day trip from Seville, Granada and Malaga, maybe even half a day if you want to quickly check into the famous spots and say you’ve stepped on where the great Casas de Poniente have walked.
If you are traveling by car it would be easy to get to Osuna on the way from Seville to Granada or Malaga. Even better, combine it with a trip to Antequera (either on an inter-city route or as a two-day trip). The Antequera and Lovers’ Rock dolmens are also best viewed by car.
If you are traveling by train, be aware that you may not have anywhere to leave your luggage at Osuna station.
Osuna locations in Game of Thrones
Osuna locations that have or can be used to represent Spear of the Sun in Game of Thrones:
- The University of Osuna A 16th century building, the once glorious university is in use once again. There was a time when the university was as prestigious as the University of Salamanca.
- La Colegiata de Osuna A 16th century church next to the university.
- Canteras de Osuna The ‘Canteras de Osuna’ where much of the sandstone that built the city was excavated.
In editing, at least one scene from Essos was filmed in Osuna: Osuna’s magnificent bullring was the Great Pit of Daznak.
More places of interest in Osuna
Other sights in Osuna, which are unlikely to appear in Game of Thrones, include:
- Calle San Pedro A beautiful street of whitewashed houses and historic buildings. Much of this street is too modern to appear in Game of Thrones.
- Hotel Palacio Marqués de la Gomera An 18th century hotel with a baroque façade. You can still stay at this hotel, and the prices are not that bad (see below).
- Monastery of the Incarnation Still in use, (it can only be visited with a nun as a guide-companion), so it may not be appropriate for filming scenes that will undoubtedly include free nudes.
- Water Tower / Museum of Archeology The people of Westeros don’t need museums and the building is perhaps too old to fit the Sunspear style (although it could be used in another setting).
How to get to Osuna
Osuna is well served by train and is convenient for day trips and for a quick stop on the way to another location.
From Seville, Malaga and Granada By train
Osuna is on two train lines: from Seville to Granada and from Seville to Malaga. There are trains every hour or two that leave from Sevilla Santa Justa (and pass through Sevilla San Bernardo) and from Granada station. The trip takes less than an hour from Seville and an hour and a half from Granada. Also on this train line are Antequera and AlmerÃa.
By bus
Linesur, the bus company that used to run the route from Seville to Osuna, appears to have closed. Other websites that claim there is a bus between the two cities appear to be very out of date.
One bus company that has a service is ALSA , but they do their best to hide that fact. The ALSA website does not list the service, but a search for the Seville to Antequera service shows that some buses on this route stop in Antequera.
Accommodation in Osuna
There are not many accommodations in Osuna, but they can be quite spectacular. The Hotel Palacio Marqués de la Gomera is one of the oldest buildings in Osuna. A stay here is very good value for money.
For a quieter experience, check out Turismo Rural de Osuna , which has rural villas on the outskirts of town.
