Peugeot bets on electrification

Peugeot is not a newcomer in the world of electrification. Let’s not forget that this French automaker started its path as a producer of electric coffee grinders in the 1930s. Not only that, Peugeot had its first 100% electric model, the VLV, in 1941 . Exactly, long before concerns about the environment and the climate emergency were a reality. That vehicle was born to overcome the fuel shortage of that time and was developed in less than a year.

The Peugeot VLV (Light City Car) measured 2.67 meters long by 1.21 wide and 1.27 meters high. It was a two-seater powered by a 1 kW electric motor and its 12-volt lead-acid batteries gave it a range of up to 80 kilometers. Those batteries took more than 10 hours to charge from a household outlet and were placed under the hood, increasing the vehicle’s weight by 160 kilograms.

Many years have passed since that first electric Peugeot model. There are many theories about the failure of battery-powered cars developed decades ago. Conspiracies aside, this 2020 no one doubts about the electrification of the car park. If it was possible almost a century ago, why not now? The lion firm knows what it is capable of and has a rather ambitious plan. Many manufacturers stretch their full introduction to electrical technology. Peugeot, on the other hand, promises its transition in less than five years. 50% of its current range offers some type of electrical technology , either hybridization or 100% zero emissions engines. Its goal is to reach 100% of its portfolio by 2023 .

If today you are looking for a Peugeot with a zero label from the DGT, you can opt for the e-208, e-2008, 3008 Hybrid and 508 Hybrid (along with its SW family variant). Nor can we forget the electrified versions of its commercial models: e-Partner, Expert and Boxer . In addition, the lion firm is expanding its offer with an electric scooter and a range of Peugeot eLCO1 bicycles. The brand wanted to emphasize the effort of the engineers to maintain the experience behind the wheel, improving their driving without affecting their more emotional appearance.
