PS2 turns 9 and we celebrate it by remembering its greatest achievements

It seems like yesterday but the best-selling console in history, PlayStation 2 , has been 9 years since its launch. It seems incredible that so much time has passed, you look back and nostalgia takes over your mind.

I remember it was Christmas, I was already the owner of a Dreamcast at that time and knew to a certain extent what that new generation had in store for us. I started with a modest ‘WRC’ to which, shortly afterwards, great classic PS2 games ‘Metal Gear Solid 2’ and 3, ‘Shadow of the Colossus’, ‘Katamary’, the two installments of ‘God of War’, were added, ‘GTA: San Andreas’, etc.

To celebrate the 9 years of life of PS2 , Sony has revealed some information about the console. A list of achievements that you probably will not know, but that only expand the legend of a machine that will go down in the annals of history:

  • One in three households in the US has a PS2.
  • 140 million people around the world have it.
  • The ‘SOCOM’ franchise is one of the most played of all time, with nearly 530 million hours online since ‘SOCOM: US Navy SEALs’ debuted in 2002. Nearly 60,000 years of online gaming.
  • More than 500 million games have been sold on PS2 in the US .
  • More than 485 developers have made games for the console.
  • By the end of this fiscal year there will be about 10,000 games in its catalog.

And the best of all is that it is not dead, it is still being sold.

I think it would be very nice if, in the comments below, each of you could explain that magical moment that you will never forget with PS2.

To encourage you to do so, I will start by giving an example:

First of all I would like to say that I have had a very good time in front of PS2, but this for some strange reason is one of the ones that marked me the most.

It was a Thursday, the day before the release of ‘GTA: San Andreas’. I was in class and I still don’t remember how, I found out that in Barcelona they were going to open a store at night to sell the game ahead of time. It was one of those situations that had always caught my attention when it happened in the US , so I thought it was my opportunity to live a similar experience.

After eating and with the excuse that the first one to arrive would be given a lowrider bicycle (later it turned out to be a raffle), I convinced a friend to accompany me to buy it and after several hours being the second in line we were able to buy the game .

It was already night and as we headed towards the subway we saw that the queue that we had started was lengthening to infinity, hundreds and hundreds of people waiting for a game in the middle of the night. It was then that I asked myself if it would have been worth it.

When I got home I started to play, I took a couple of laps around CJ’s house and I found a bike lying in the middle of the street. I started pedaling and, coincidence of fate, I ran into a hill. As I climbed the camera focused towards the sky, it was getting dark and everything was dyed red. Upon reaching the top, I came across an impressive sunset and a spectacular view of San Andreas. At that moment I realized how much I had to go with that bike and I knew that that afternoon had been worth it. I have that moment burned into my head.

Your turn.
