Jim Ryan , president of Sony Interactive Entertainment, is back in the spotlight today and again for a PS5 backward compatibility issue. Although this morning we learned that the new Sony console will be backward compatible with 99% of the PS4 catalog, this will not be the case for PS3, PS2 and PSX .
It was one of the questions that more people asked and about which news of all kinds have emerged, but finally Jim Ryan wanted to settle this issue in a statement he has offered to the Japanese magazine Famitsu (translated by Siliconera). Thus he has declared that PS5 will only be backward compatible with PS4 games , nothing more.
The reason he has given is that the company simply has not had enough time to work on something like this:
We take into account specialized engineering for PS5 while producing the machine. In the midst of all that, PS4 already has 100 million players; We thought they should also want to play PS4 games on the PS5, so we included backward compatibility with PS4. By implementing that we also focused our efforts on incorporating the high-speed SSD and the new DualSense controller. So, unfortunately, we didn’t have time to come up with an implementation of that support.
Ubisoft itself already let it fall at the end of August on its official website the fact that its games published on the first three PlayStation were not going to be available on PS5. Therefore, in this way this matter is put to an end and as of November 19 the Sony console for the next generation will only allow us to play their own titles and the vast majority of those that have seen the light on PS4.
