Exercise can be "served" in a bottle … of wine. An antioxidant present in high amounts in grapes and red wine, resveratrol , prevents the body from the negative effects of a sedentary life, according to US research published in the FASEB Journal .
The scientists conducted the studies by subjecting a group of rats to a sedentary environment, suspending them by the tail to limit movement. One group was given resveratrol. The rodents, naturally, began to suffer a decrease in muscle mass and strength and generated insulin resistance . They also had a loss of minerals and weak bones. However, the rodents that took revestratol, despite little physical movement, did not develop negative consequences.
"There is overwhelming data and information on how the human body needs physical activity, but for some of us, having this activity is not easy," explains Gerald Weissmann, editor-in-chief of the magazine, referring to astronauts subjected to weightlessness, or sick people forced to stay out of bed during their convalescence, and even workers who spend many more hours than recommended sitting in the office. " Resveratrol is not a substitute for exercise, but it can slow the deterioration process until the individual can get moving," adds Weissmann.
