Slieve League in County Donegal

Slieve League will take your breath away, that’s a promise; The Slieve League Cliffs in Donegal are the highest sea cliffs in Europe. An almost steep drop of about 2,000 feet separates the Atlantic Ocean from the highest point of the cliffs. A guaranteed lethal drop, so extra care is recommended, especially with children.

Why go to the Slieve League in County Donegal?

Slieve League is the thinking man’s alternative to the Cliffs of Moher, if only for the much more natural and less crowded experience. The difference in height is of academic interest only. Slieve League is taller, but you really won’t notice. And while you pay tons of money just to park near the Cliffs of Moher, Slieve League is free. Why then is this cliff in Donegal not more popular?

Signposted only locally and in the middle of one of Ireland’s most remote areas, the Slieve League is not easy to get to. And this will not improve once you take the signposted route. In fact, it will get worse: a winding, narrow, and frankly bumpy road leads you to a farm gate (open and most importantly close this yourself). You will soon have reached a parking lot and the end of the road for larger vehicles. You can continue if you are in a car, despite hostile gazes from walkers.

But you must not suffer vertigo; The road practically becomes a single track and there is no margin for error (not to mention the safety barriers) on the sea side. Go slow! As far as we know, no car has taken the long step, don’t be the occupant of the first.

Once you get there

At the end of the road, you can find another smaller parking lot. This is also the safest and most convenient platform for a really impressive view. Right in front of you (as long as there is no fog or low clouds) a green meadow stops abruptly and at a vertical distance of about 2,000 feet away, the waves crash against the rocks. Boulders that look like stones from up here.

If you want to explore, a path hugs the edge of the cliff and can be followed. Security measures are pretty basic; watch your steps and do not get distracted.
