At the end of November, storm “Arwen” caused chaos. Now “Barra” is sweeping the British Isles. Tens of thousands of people are without electricity.
Dublin – Storm “Barra” has paralyzed the electricity supply in parts of Ireland. With wind speeds of sometimes more than 130 kilometers per hour, 49,000 houses and companies were still cut off from the power supply in the early afternoon, as the National Directorate for Fire Emergency Management announced on Tuesday.
Sometimes there were floods, and again and again fallen trees obstructed traffic. The southwest around the city of Cork was particularly affected. The authorities there advised against unnecessary journeys, people should stay at home and stay away from the coast if possible. Dozens of fishing boats, including from Germany, sought shelter in bays. Initially, however, there were no reports of injuries or even deaths.
In Great Britain, too, there were some disabilities because of “Barra”. Trees fell and snow blocked roads. It was not until November 26 that storm “Arwen” caused devastation in Great Britain. Hundreds of households in north-east England have still been without electricity since then. dpa
