Sony is giving a special priority to PS5 and its most recent registration in the Japan Patent Office, signed by Mark Cerny himself, aims to be the real blow on the table that fans of the brand were asking for: hardware emulation of the four PlayStation desktops.
In other words, as stated from Twinfinite, Cerny has patented a backwards compatibility system that would recognize the original PlayStation software as well as PS2, PS3 and PS4 . A bet that would bring together the games of all its generations, very much in line with what Microsoft is already doing.
The system described in the patent would allow the device in question to detect if it is a software compatible with an old model of PlayStation , allowing the processor to impersonate (emulate) the console in question in this new system.

The patent assigned number 2019-503013 has been designed by Mark Cerny, Sony architect and responsible for the design of PS4. However, neither it nor Sony have offered a preview of plans and innovations around PS5 beyond the reinforcement of their PS Network services.
On the other hand, if this move is confirmed, it would arrive with a Sony with a much more open mind , which lends itself to cross-play and which will expand its legacy through PS Now to new territories including Spain.
Now, that a company makes a registration of a patent does not imply that we are going to see it in use . But considering Sony’s future strategies and that there are talks to bring current and future projects to the next generation of PlayStation consoles, we have reason to be optimistic .
