Vitamin D has long been known to be important for reproduction in both animals and humans. But it is now that, for the first time, scientists from the University of Copenhagen (Denmark) have shown that the higher the level of vitamin D in the blood, the greater the mobility of human sperm, and the faster they advance . The results are published in the latest issue of the journal Human Reproduction .
The study fails to clarify, however, whether using vitamin D supplements could improve sperm quality both in healthy men and in subjects with fertility problems. "The low quality of semen can be attributed to numerous causes, but it usually has a fetal origin, similar to some genital malformations," explains Anders Juul, co-author of the study. "However, this study indicates that there are factors in adult life that can also affect semen quality ."
Having low levels of vitamin D has also been linked to allergies, asthma, Parkinson's, and obesity, among other health disorders.
