Amblin Partners , the production company directed by Steven Spielberg, has reached an agreement with Netflix to produce multiple feature films a year, in a long-term agreement for both. An association from which Netflix obtains productions under a quality seal such as that provided by Spielberg and his production company, while this acquires the possibility of being able to produce their stories without any gender or budget restriction.
The director was enthusiastic in his first remarks about the deal and says it will be incredibly satisfying for him personally as he can embark with her alongside Ted, Netflix’s co-CEO and chief content officer . Spielberg also mentioned the capacity that both will have working together: “At Amblin, storytelling will always be at the center of everything we do (…) when we started discussing the partnership, it was very clear that we had an incredible opportunity to tell new stories together and reach audiences in new ways ”.
From Netflix, Ted Sarandos himself was very happy with the agreement between Spielberg and his production company with the company. “Steven is a visionary and creative leader,” stated Sarandos, adding “my growth was shaped by his memorable characters and stories that have been enduring, inspiring (…) we are honored and excited to be a part of this chapter in the cinematic history of Steven”.
It is still too early to know what the projects will be agreed with Netflix and yet, Amblin has had a lot of work in recent months, with a large number of films to be released while Spielberg, finalizes the necessary preparations to shoot this summer his autobiographical feature film. The director of ET the Extraterrestrial is the latest in a long line of directors who have ended up falling into Netflix production networks. Martin Scorsese, Rian Johnson, David Fincher … all have ended up signing their projects under the company of “the big N”. And that, taking into account that Spielberg himself was very critical in his day with the absence of the cinematographic experience in streaming. Amblin has already worked successfully with Netflix on the Oscar-nominated Trial of the Seven and was awarded the Oscar for best picture for Green Book in 2018.
