Berlin – The British director Steve McQueen (“12 Years a Slave”) receives a special honor at the European Film Awards: He receives an award for innovative storytelling for his BBC series “Small Ax”.

The five films are inspired by real-life events in the UK’s Caribbean community in the 1970s and 1980s. The European Film Academy recognized the epic as groundbreaking. It shows the audience a point of view that it has not seen before. It intensively investigates “how systemic racism continuously fuels injustice and the struggle for civil rights is not the same for everyone in Europe”.

McQueen will receive the award as a guest of honor at the award ceremony on December 11th in Berlin, according to the announcement on Tuesday. “Small Ax” can be seen on Amazon Prime. dpa
