Storm damage to the controversial facade of the Humboldt Forum

The latest series of storms has affected a controversial building in Berlin. Specifically, it is about the baroque facade of the museum.

Berlin – The baroque facade of the Humboldt Forum in Berlin, which has been criticized since the start of construction, is crumbling. After the recent storms, parts of the Schlueterhof had to be closed. According to information from the Humboldt Forum Foundation on Saturday, parts of the plaster have fallen off a window curve. This is now being investigated to find the reasons.

The entrance to the Sculpture Hall, a portal in the historicist façade with a ceiling projection above it, is cordoned off over a wide area with red and white chains. In the courtyard in front of it, chunks up to five centimeters in size are still scattered on the ground.

The façade of the prestige property, costing around 680 million euros, is a reconstruction of the historic city palace on three sides of the building. Around 100 million euros were collected for this by a private initiative. This was a prerequisite for the construction of the Humboldt Forum, which is still hotly disputed today.

The cultural and event center, generously financed by the federal government, is organized by the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation with two of its museums, the State of Berlin, the Humboldt University and the Humboldt Forum Foundation. Exhibits from Asia, Africa, America and Oceania as well as objects relating to the history of Berlin are on display in the 40,000 square meter building. dpa
