Storm expected on the coast and in the Harz mountains

Meteorologists warn of storms and gusts of wind – Sunday night will be uncomfortable for many people in northern Germany.

Hamburg/Hannover – The people in Germany’s north face a stormy night. The German Weather Service (DWD) warned of storms up to hurricane gusts on the coast and in the north-eastern half of the country.

“The peak of the storm is expected on Sunday night,” said a DWD meteorologist in Offenbach. As the DWD announced, the winds in many places in Lower Saxony intensify during the evening and can reach speeds of up to 110 kilometers per hour on the coasts. Occasionally in Schleswig-Holstein and on exposed sections of the Baltic Sea coast in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, hurricane gusts of wind force twelve with speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour cannot be ruled out.

The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) has tightened its storm surge warning. The BSH announced that there was now a risk of a severe storm surge for the German North Sea coast. The water levels in Hamburg’s Elbe area could be 2.5 to 3 meters higher than the average high water level. The apex is expected to be reached around 1:50 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Ferry connections are interrupted

According to the information, there is also a warning of a severe storm surge for East and North Friesland. Several ferries between Rostock and Gedser on the Danish island of Falster are canceled on the Baltic Sea. As the shipping company Scandlines announced, connections from Saturday at 3.45 p.m. to Sunday at 9 a.m. are affected. The regular timetable should be resumed on Sunday with the trips from Rostock and Gedser at 11.15 a.m. According to Scandlines, customers can use the ferries from Puttgarden to Rødby on the Danish island of Lolland.

The DWD also expects severe gusts of wind up to 100 kilometers per hour on the Brocken in the Harz Mountains – hurricane gusts are also possible on the 1141 high summit until Sunday afternoon. For the Brockenbahn, Schierke station is therefore the terminus. The trains do not continue to the Brocken station, said the Harz narrow-gauge railways. Disturbances are also expected for Sunday. The DWD also issued a severe weather warning for the Erzgebirge district in Saxony. On the 1215 meter high Fichtelberg there could be hurricane gusts on Sunday night.

The Berliners and Brandenburgers also have to prepare for a stormy weekend. On Saturday evening there should be more stormy gusts, in the Uckermark even isolated hurricane-like gusts. The DWD warned that severe gusts of wind are to be expected on Sunday night. In North Rhine-Westphalia, too, people expect rain, snow showers and sometimes stormy gusts.

According to the DWD, the wind will decrease over the course of the day on Sunday, and the day will then mostly be quite friendly – with maximum temperatures between four and eight degrees. “In the night to Monday and on Monday there is a risk of new adversity,” said the meteorologist. A low ensures rain and snow above 200 to 400 meters across the country. In addition, stormy winds are blowing, especially in the west and south-west. The changeable and very windy weather will not change in the coming days. dpa

Our children's graduations mark the end of a stage and remind us how fast...

They say that in raising children the days are long and the years are short, and of course they are right. But perhaps it is especially in these days of school graduations and changes of stage, when we realize it the most.
