The 500 most frequent names in Spain, and by provinces

When parents search for a name for their baby, popularity is one of the factors they take into account when choosing. The National Institute of Statistics (INE) of Spain has released the most frequent names of men and women in Spain , updated as of January 1, 2019.

Antonio and María Carmen repeat once again as the most common names in Spain, carried by more than 600 thousand people in our country. It should be borne in mind that they are names of adults, over thirty years of age and the vast majority over fifty. Trends for newborns are very different today.

The classic names in Spain

Antonio and María Carmen are followed by Manuel , who unseats José in second place and María for them. But if we talk about both simple and compound names, in Spain there are 6.17 million women named María and 2.71 million men named José. However, both names show a downward trend.

The average age of men named Antonio is 56.3, while that of women named María Carmen is 57.8 years. Laura is the “new” name that sneaks into the top ten of female names, with an average age of 29.2 years, and Daniel in the case of men, with an average age of 27.6 years.

It is also observed that names of continents such as Africa or America are becoming popular, while those from countries such as Argentina, Libya, France, Greece or India are accompanied by a ‘María’.

The names most chosen by parents today do not coincide with these, as trends change over the years. For example, María del Carmen, thus composed, has not appeared in the INE statistics for a long time among the 100 most ranked names in Spain for newborns.

María and Carmen , separately, are among the names most chosen by parents. María occupies fourth place at the national level (according to the latest data from 2018) and Carmen is the most popular girl’s name in Extremadura and one of the 10 names that sound the most for newborns in Andalusia, and Murcia.

Antonio and Jose occupy positions 24 and 41 respectively, although the name of Antonio continues to be one of the favorites in Andalusia and Extremadura.

The most popular names today, according to the latest data (from 2018), are Hugo and Lucia.
